What I Do

Part of a series by Kate Beaton.

I’m a senior reporter covering gun policy and politics at Guardian US. You can hear me talk about covering this beat–and about what it might take to reduce gun violence in America–in this On the Media interview. You can also read my recent series on why the gun control debate is broken and how to fix it.

Before I joined the Guardian, I spent four years as an investigative reporter at ProPublica, where I covered the intersection of data, technology, and politics. My Essence Magazine story on PTSD caused by gun violence, “Black America’s Invisible Crisis,” won a 2015 Deadline Award for public service and a NABJ Salute to Excellence Award in investigative journalism.

As a journalist, my reporting is driven by data and research–and I often examine the tensions between what’s politically popular and what actually seems to work.  I cover all sides of America’s gun debate–including this video from the NRA convention on what liberals get wrong about guns.
